In October 2023, I began volunteering with The Abbey Theatre St Albans, as an Assistant Set Designer/Builder.

I was told that the resident 'Company of Teens' were to stage a stage adaptation of Robert Westall's 'The Machine Gunners', so I offered my services as Historical Advisor, Props Buyer, and afore mentioned Design and Build Assistant.

 

I worked with the Company and Crew over the next 3 months; teaching them period context, attitudes/mannerisms, Machine Gun handling, and generally trying to make the play as accurate as possible!

I also helped create various props/set dressing items, design and build a Heinkel Bomber's cockpit, source a Machine Gun replica, and find Luftwaffe flying gear for 'Rudi' - a shot down rear gunner!
